Do you ask students to write a journal? Why or why not?

If you do require journal writing, how do you do it? Do you select the topics that students write about? Can they choose from several topics? Which topics seem to work very well? Do you ask them to come up with their own topic? Do you require a certain number of words or sentences? Do you collect in the journals? If so, what do you with them? Do you write comments?
