Volume 2 of translations of the complete poems of Nakahara Chûya

This bilingual book marks the first complete English translation of Nakahara Chûya’s second volume of poetry, Arishi hi no uta ( 在りし日の歌 ). The book includes an introduction in which Beville outlines Chûya’s life and work, and justifies his “verse translation” approach to many of the poems. With varying success he attempts to convey structural devices of the original– what many call the music of the poetry– while attaining to the literal meanings as well.
